Electricians Working in Australia

Western Australia Licencing presentation

Downunder Tradies Group will assist you in your preparation for work in Australia before you leave the UK. We facilitate the required steps taking the stress and inconvenience out of these timely processes, avoiding you weeks of potential complications.

General Skilled Migration Program

If you are a British qualified Electrician, and you’d like to migrate to Australia, the General Skilled Migration (GSM) Program is the way to do it. You can gain a GSM visa by fulfilling a certain criteria. Fulfilling requirements of the criteria earns you points, and when you have enough points, you are eligible for a GSM visa.

The most important requirement within this process is to prove that you are a skilled worker. As an electrician, you are required to have your skills assessed by Vic Uni which is responsible for assessing trade skills in the UK for the purpose of obtaining a migration visa. Vic Uni is a private company under contract to Trades Recognition Australia.

Through our relationships with Vic Uni, Migration Agent partners and others, Downunder Tradies Group will assist you in getting your visa, completing your training and getting you prepared for your Australian electrical qualifications.

Victoria University

As mentioned above, Vic Uni is an Australian company responsible for assessing electrical trade skills gained in the UK. This is achieved by written, oral and practical examinations regarding your electrical knowledge and practical ability. We can help you with:

The Downunder Tradies Group Electrical Refresher Course is designed for Candidates awaiting assessment by Vic Uni. The course covers key areas of electrical knowledge, to face the Vic Uni Technical Interview with confidence and place you in the best possible position to pass first time around.

Once you feel that you are confident and ready, we can book you in to the next available Vic Uni Technical Interview. Once you have successfully completed the Vic Uni Technical Interview, you will be issued with an Off-Shore Technical Skills Record (OTSR), which is used in your GSM visa application, and later for licencing purposes in Australia.

Throughout the Vic Uni process, the Downunder Tradies Group Team will be there to answer your questions and get you the help you need.

Australian Electrical Qualifications for states and territories other than Western Australian

Once you have been granted your GSM visa, you need to start thinking about getting your full Australian electrical qualifications. This involves:

Your OTSR ( Offshore Technical Skills Record) means youcan be granted a provisional restricted electrical permit, which means you can only work under direct supervision for a period of up to 12 months depending on the State you choose to work.

The first step towards gaining your unrestricted Australian electrical licence is to complete the MACG Training. For the first time, the MACG Training can now be completed in the UK, exclusively through Downunder Tradies Group, at our London training centre. Our course is delivered in one block, enabling you to achieve your MACG Training certificate in just 7 weeks. This avoids the high costs and several months it can take in Australia. As a bonus, it will make you much more attractive to Australian employers, as you won’t require intermittent time off for classes, plus, you’ll be familiar with Australian systems.

The MACG Training consists of 7 modules, covering a range of topics, including Wiring Rules, Electrical Systems Safety, and Protection Methods, in the context of Australian electrical systems. The course also includes the Workcover ‘White Card’, the mandatory occupational health and safety qualification, for entry onto construction sites Australia wide.

The second step in the Australian licencing process, is gaining up to 12 months Australian electrical industry experience. This experience needs to be recorded via an approved evidence tool. Downunder Tradies Group, in cooperation with Canberra Institute Of Technology (CIT), will register you with the eProfiling system. eProfiling allows you to record your hours of experience, which are then stored electronically. You will receive quarterly reports on your progress, and when the required amount of time has been achieved, depending on the State you choose to work, you will receive access to the final step of the Australian licencing process – the Capstone Assessment.

The Capstone Assessment is the final licencing exam for Australian electricians. The assessment can only be attempted after completion of the MACG Training, and the on the job Australian industry experience. When you are ready, Downunder Tradies Group, in cooperation with the CIT , will arrange for you to sit your Capstone assessment.

When you have completed all of the above, you will be ready to apply for your Unrestricted Electrical Licence. Downunder Tradies Group will help you gather your evidence, and guide you through the application process in your State or Territory.

Downunder Tradies Group can also help in loads of other areas, from getting you discounted rates on flights, to getting you a Tax File Number or Australian bank account.
